About Rock Solid

Rock Solid 2006-2007

Rock Solid continues to attract a number of children from the community, who (mostly) do not belong to the more traditional Boys’, Girls’ Brigades or the church based families. The number on the roll has grown steadily; there are currently 13 on the roll, with about 30 different children attending over the time. Regular weekly numbers are between 8 to 10. Half of the regular of attendees are children that have been coming for the last 2-3 years, and we see new faces almost every week.

The structure of the night is based around the Youth for Christ (YFC) “Rock Solid” material, which is very interactive games based. Some games encourage teamwork; others are for fun and can be energetic. Most of the games will be based around a theme, for which there will be a more serious discussion/talk. Some of the issues that have been covered in the last year are –ambitions, fear, teamwork, peer pressure, guidance and forgiveness.

As always some of the time the group can be noisy, but can be attentive to the serious parts of the discussions. Some of the conversations that the leaders have with the children from the relationships they have built up over the last few years show that what has been spoken about have touched their consciousness/souls. We may never fully realise how much God is doing in the lives of these youngsters, but weekly the leaders are encouraged to see glimpses of lives slowly maturing and developing, and to have the privilege of young persons sharing private concerns.

Last year (2nd – 4th June) Rock Solid had a weekend away with 8 of the group at Whithaugh park, Newcastleton. They had a great time and enjoyed the activities of raft building, orienteering, mountain biking, swimming and initiative games. Again, we are looking to do a weekend away, which is happening on the 27-19th April at Whithaugh Park, 11 children are coming away this year

The leaders were sad to loose the experienced help of Danny Pulman this year, due to work commitments, over the last few years he has shown dedication and commitment to the work. We are thankful for the assistance from our occasional helpers, Joanne, Ruth, Ellen and Sharon. We thank the indispensable supporters who give regularly to provide for our membership to YFC Rock Solid, and we acknowledge our dependence on those whose continuing prayers support us in our actions. We also need to thank all those that assisted with the fundraising last year for the weekend away.

Prayer points for the future:

  • That the children will remain safe and continue to feel safe in the environment.
  • That the witness of the leaders and helpers help the children through a tough part of their maturing lives.
  • May God be able to touch these young lives for the good of all involved.
  • That there will be continued assistance for leaders of the group, as other commitments have lessened numbers at times.
  • That we have a safe and enjoyable time on the weekend away.

Weekend Away

The weekend away is 27th - 29th April at Whithaugh Park, at present we have 10 children going with a couple more possible.

There are some that would like to go but have only been attending for a little while, we pray that as leaders we are fair with those in this group.
